Kilts are traditional costumes in Scotland and their popularity there really came to prominence when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took a real liking to all things Scottish encouraging the whole of the UK to become interested in tartan. It was at this time that certain types of tartan began to become associated with certain clans in the country and many people believed that you had to be a member of the clan to wear that specific tartan.
